For those who are unfamiliar with this disease, Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of blindness in our elderly population, age 60 and older, and as of yet there has been no known cure. The new Cirrus HD-OCT machine has proven to provide eye care professionals with the most detailed, layer-by-layer, three-dimensional, full depth evaluation available. This Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) produces 27,000 scans per second and offers detailed 3-D imaging throughout the entire macular area. This test is quick, painless, and non-invasive. The results of OCT testing are interpreted within seconds so the doctor is able to review the findings immediately and consult with the patient. With this new technology, any stage of Macular Degeneration can be detected and stored for comparison and monitoring progression. We can also now detect several other retinal diseases much earlier than ever before including, but not limited to, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, vascular conditions, retinal detachments, and retinal edema.
